볼품없는 용모를 지닌 영웅, 강감찬의 출생 이야기 연구 = A Study on the Birth Narrative of Gang Gam-chan, an Unprepossessing Hero

Gang Gam-chan is a hero who saved the nation from a crisis. Therefore, many stories about Gang Gam-chan are passed down. However, look at the story of Gang Gam-chan, two questions arise. One is the birth narrative, which is differently inherited from the literature records and oral tales, and the other is his unattractive appearance. In response, this paper sought to find the secret of the birth of Gang Gam-chan, an unprepossessing hero.
“Goryeosa” “Gang Gam-chanjeon” is understood to be a work that talks about ‘the lifetime of the hero Goryeo' rather than 'the lifetime of the hero Gang Gam-chan.’ In other words, it depicts not Gang Gam-chan but Hyeonjong, a Goryeo Dynasty figure, who led the war to victory in the war against the Kitan. In other words, “Goryeosa” “Gang Gam-chanjeon” is a literature record that reflects the chroniclers’ attitude to put the center of the story in Goryeo, not in Gang Gam-chan.
However, “Gang Gam-chanjeon” is also a story that contains not only ‘the lifetime of hero Goryeo’ but also ‘the memory of Gang Gam-chan’. Therefore, “Gang Gam-chanjeon” is part of the ‘Hero Goryeo’s lifetime’ and records not only the victory of Goryeo but also a particular point about Gang Gam-chan. Those are ‘falling star birth narrative’ and ‘unattractive appearance’.
In “Gang Gam-chanjeon”, the mystic birth narrative is described as a ‘falling star birth narrative’. Originally, however, “Gang Gam-chanjeon”’s birth narrative is considered to be a ‘birth narrative through a fox’, which is passed down by oral tradition. In other words, “Gang Gam-chanjeon”’s ‘falling star birth narrative’ is a birth narrative reorganized by the chroniclers. As a result of interpreting Gang Gam-chanjeon’s birth story, which is handed down from the private sector, ‘birth story through foxes’ has been transformed into ‘falling star birth narrative’. This pattern is also found in the “Dangun Mythology”, which transformed the appearance of Dangun from being born through bears to being descended from heaven.
Then why Gang Gam-chan’s matrilineage was a fox? The reason is that birth narrative through a fox was a story that kept traces of the progenitor myth. Birth narrative through a fox was created in connection with Gang Gam-chan, an extraordinary hero, over time.
In the oral folk tale, Gang Gam-chan was remembered as a descendant of a human and a fox. Therefore, Gang Gam-chan’s appearance was bound to resemble a fox. The appearance resembling a fox is his face gets pockmarked, which is expressed in the literature as an ‘unattractive appearance’.
