This article is to explore the concept of identity and educational direction for identity. First, I examined two models of identity:Traditional view and recent view. The traditional view regards identity as essential, immutable, fixed substance. The recent views of identity, postmoderism and cyberspace, are no longer substance; Fluid, flexible, multiple, decentered, in-process, constructed, reconstructed, and reinterpreted through the relationships between self and others. I explored strength and weakness of the traditional view and the recent view, and proposed the integrated view of identity. Narrative identity is based on the integrated view. Ricoeur considers identity as the dialectic of idem-identity(identity as sameness) and ipse-identity(identity as selfhood). Narrative identity is to construct identity through the stories one tells herself/himself’s life. Identity formation in the integrated view is related to ethical aspect. Therefore, education for narrative identity is useful to moral education. I also proposed the direction of schooling for narrative identity.
