For the past 40 years, community murals in the United States have become part of the communities and representative of the local and cultural identities, filling up the streets and alleys to look at and to speak of. This type of mural work originated from the Chicano and black mural movements of the late 1960s, and assumed the role of artistic and cultural leads in the civil rights movement. These mural movements exemplify how art could transform people’s consciousness and trigger the creation of new perspectives on not only local or ethnic identities but also national ones.
Among the muralists who have grown out of this movement, Judy Baca is one of the most famous and influential artists and educators who proposed and practiced a significant new vision regarding the role of art. Through an analysis of Baca’s projects, this paper examines how she has expanded her perspective from a Chicano-based to a multicultural one and from a multicultural to a transnational one. Moreover, by focusing on The Great Wall of Los Angeles(1984) (hereafter, The Great Wall), this paper examines the educational methods proposed by Baca and effects of her work.
The Great Wall, the longest mural in the world, depicts California’s history from the ancient times to the 1950s, and illustrates the sacrifices and contributions of diverse ethnic groups that were completely invisible in conventional textbooks. During the 1970s, cultural work such as community murals primarily followed separatist categories and notions such as Chicano’s work for the Mexican-American neighborhood and Black for Black. However, The Great Wall reflects a multicultural notion of history and identity, arguably for the first time, on a large scale. However, the painted wall itself does not convey the entire story of the painting of The Great Wall. The process and relations between the people who created the mural were regarded as important as the mural itself. In total, over 400 youth from multiracial groups were employed. For them and the neighborhood people, The Great Wall provided an educational program of training in interracial relations to help overcome prejudices and to better understand other cultural groups.
Her later work, The World Wall: A Vision of the Future without Fear(1987~) (hereafter, The World Wall), represents another important step toward a more inclusive vision. It comprises eight dual-sided, 10 x 30 foot portable mural panels on canvas, literally crossing national borders, and has been created by a panel of artists from various countries such as Finland, Russia, Mexico, and Israel.
While The Great Wall is a monument to the first multicultural works and reflects a national perspective, The World Wall is an attempt to end misunderstandings and conflicts from a transnational or global perspective.
