The purpose of this study was to analyze the current status of the gifted classes and to propose a remedy. Analysis of the operation plan and educational program were done. An analysis mold to analyze the operation plan and educational program was invented with reference to the analysis. Analysis according the mold was held in four randomly selected elementary schools running science classes for the gifted students in the Gyeonggi district and Incheon city.
The results of the analysis of the operation plan of the classes were as followed.
First, goals of gifted class and basic operation direction were satisfactory, however plans for parent training programs and self evaluation of the classes were not presented.
Second, annual plans that included various activities did not cover the whole scopes of science topics (eg. physics, chemistry, creature, earth science) equally.
Third, unlike the various methods to select the students of each class, contents on student management and evaluation were not presented concretely. Although consulting was assigned teachers were not ensured. A comprehensive and concrete improvement student evaluation seems to be required.
Fourth, many teachers did not completed their training courses and programs to enhance their specialties was insufficient.
Fifth, the schools lacked gifted education object selection committees and steering committees. Specific data of the concrete educational facilities and equipment were lacking. And an output basis of budget organization seems necessary.
The results of the analysis on the educational programs were as follows.
First, goals were stated with specific behavioral terms, but leaned to the cognitional and the functional aspects.
Second, generally the program was about accelerating learning, and instead of more real life subjects short lived subjects and concepts were taught. It presented a common assignment rather than a more individualized assignment.
Third, the program suggest teaching and learning method through experimentation, however experiment of standardization disturbed the growth of a self directed problem-solving ability. And the program also seemed to suggest only one correct answer rather than stimulating various thinking. As a result development of high class thinking ability was not possible.
Fourth, the results were required in the form of an experiment result report.
Fifth, total outline and curriculums did not include the goals and purposes of each program leading to an inelaborate program. Teaching and learning protocols were present however various data and readings for students were necessary.
