손자녀 돌봄과 중․고령자의 주관적 노후인식에 관한 연구： 여성과 남성 비교를 중심으로 = A Study on the Relationship between Providing Care for Grandchildren and Subjective Perceptions of Aging among the Middle and Old Aged People： Comparisons between Female and Male

Drawing on the idea that examining perceptions of aging is important to understanding the lives of older persons, this study examined the relationship between providing care for grandchildren and the subjective perceptions of aging of the middle and old aged adults. In addition, this research explored if there is a gender difference in the relationship between the two factors. This study used the data from the Korean Retirement and Income study, fifth wave, and binary logistic regression to analyze the data. The following results were found. First, grandparents providing care for grandchildren were more likely to perceive themselves as being in later life, suggesting that providing care for grandchildren can be a predictor of the subjective perception of aging. Moreover, grandmothers, but not grandfathers, providing care for grandchildren were more likely to feel that they were old. In terms of intensity of providing care for grandchildren, grandparents providing a low intensity of care (less than 40 hours per week) were more likely to perceive themselves as being in later life than grandparents providing no care. By dividing the sample of this study into men and women, a significant relationship between providing care for grandchildren and subjective perceptions of aging was found in women but not men. It is suggested that the different findings for men and women are related to our social culture that considers caring for family members as women’s work.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 손자녀 돌봄이 중․고령자의 주관적 노후인식에 미치는 영향을 살펴봄으로써, 노후시기를 이해하는데 도움을 주고자 한다. 이를 위해 국민노후보장패널 5차년도 자료를사용하여 손자녀 돌봄 여부 및 손자녀 돌봄 강도에 따라 50대 이상 중․고령자들이 스스로노후로 인식하는지 여부를 알아보고, 성별에 따라 손자녀 돌봄이 중․고령자들의 주관적 노후인지여부에 미치는 영향이 차이가 있는지 비교하였다.
연구결과, 인구사회학적 요인을 통제한 상태에서 중․고령자들의 주관적 노후인식 여부는손자녀 돌봄 여부 및 돌봄 강도에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 즉 손자녀를 돌보지 않는 조부모에 비해 손자녀를 돌보는 조부모일수록, 스스로 노후로 인식하는 가능성이 높았으며 특히, 저강도(주평균 40시간 미만)의 손자녀 돌봄을 제공하는 조부모일수록 주관적으로 노후로 인식하는 확률이 높았다. 또한 이러한 연구결과는 성별에 따라 차이를 보였으며, 남성보다는여성에서 손자녀 돌봄에 따른 주관적 노후인식 여부가 다르게 나타났다. 이를 통해, 손자녀돌봄이 중․고령층의 주관적 노후 인식에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인임이 나타났으며, 본연구의 결과는 다양하게 정의되고 있는 노후를 이해하고, 노인을 위한 정책적 방안을 모색하는데 손자녀 돌봄이 고려되어야 함을 제시한다고 할 수 있다
