실천신학의 학문적 발달에 대한 고찰과 포스트모던 상황에서의 방향성 모색

국문 초록 (Abstract)

실천신학의 학문적 발달은 18세기 근대주의의 출현과 함께 시작되었다. 과학적 합 리성과 전문화된 연구프로그램을 강조하기 시작한 근대의 지적, 사회적 도전에 응답 하기위해 고민하던 당시 신학은 변화된 유럽 대학 안에서 학문으로서 정체성을 확립 하려는 노력의 일환으로 신학백과사전을 출간하였다. 당시 신학백과사전 패러다임을 따라 실천신학은 주로 교회 지도자를 양성하기 위해 철학신학과 역사신학의 연구결과 를 적용하는 응용신학으로 규정되었다. 그러나 1980년대 이후 실천신학의 근대적 패 러다임이 지닌 한계를 극복하고자 실천신학의 정체성을 재확립하고 고유의 방법론을 개발하려는 다양한 논의가 북아메리카와 유럽을 중심으로 활발히 전개되고 있다. 이 러한 논의는 다양한 방향으로 전개되었지만, 공통적으로는 근대와 다른 포스트모던 시대의 문화적, 지적 상황이 던지는 새로운 도전에 응전하기 위한 시도들이라 볼 수 있다. 캐서린 카하란(Kathleen A. Cahalan)은 최근 30년간 전개된 다양한 실천신학 분야에서의 논의들을 ‘모더니즘의 위기에 어떻게 반응하는가’에 대한 응답양식을 기준 으로 세 그룹, 후기 모던(the late modern), 반 모던(the countermodern), 급진적 포스 트모던 (the radical postmodern)으로 분류하였다. 본 연구는 근대로부터 현재에 이르 기까지 실천신학의 학문적 발달을 역사적으로 고찰한다. 또한 다원주의와 불확실성으 로 대표되는 포스트모던 사회에서 실천신학의 역할과 나아갈 방향을 재조명해본다. 중세나 근대의 종교 지도자들이 사회 내에서 누리던 위계 질서적 권위나 거대담화 (metanarrative)로서의 종교적 기능이 퇴색한 포스트모던 상황에서 실천 신학자와 기 독교 공동체의 지도자들은 그들의 역할을 새로운 시각에서 탐색할 필요가 있다. 다원 적인 포스트모던 사회에서 실천신학자나 기독교 공동체 지도자들은 개인적이고 구체 적 차원에서 공동체 구성원의 삶을 인도하고 해석해주는 해석자의 역할을 감당함으로 써 여전히 현대인들이 하나님과의 관계를 유지할 수 있도록, 나아가 더욱 개인적이고 인격적 차원에서 의미있는 하나님과의 관계를 유지하도록 도울 수 있다. 또한 포스트 모던 시대의 실천신학은 교차학제적 대화를 통하여 실천 신학 고유의 정체성을 유지 하면서도 타 학문의 관점을 참조함으로써 복잡하고 다차원적인 삶의 상황을 심도 있 게 해석하고 구체적인 실천방안을 다면적으로 제시할 수 있어야 한다. 이를 위해 실 천신학자와 기독교 공동체 지도자들은 포스트모던 자아 정체성에 대한 새로운 이해를 바탕으로, 인생의 다양한 역할과 문제에 직면한 현대인들이 기독교적 전통과 대화할 수 있도록 촉진하며, 이 대화를 기초로 자신의 삶을 해석하고 매일의 인생 사건에 새 로운 의미를 부여하고 신앙적 가치 가운데 일상의 삶을 선택 할 수 있도록 인도한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Practical theology as an academic discipline emerged in the 18th century, in the context of modernity. The academic atmosphere of modernity was characterized by scientific rationality and a specialized research program as a form of rationality. Faced with a question whether it had any place at all in the modern research university, modern theology adopted the methods of modern scholarship and following a specific literary genre emerged in the modern university, that is, encyclopedias, it too produced field-oriented encyclopaedias. Yet, in the scheme of this encyclopedic organization of theology, practical theology was identified as an applied theology to serve for the church leadership. Since the 1980's, practical theologians in North America and Europe have attempted to overcome the limited notion of practical theology and its tasks. Katheleen A. Cahalan categorizes the recent approaches in practical theology into three groups, that is, the late modern, the countermodern, and the radical postmodern, according to their responses to the crisis of modernity. Despite their differences in approach, all of these types of practical theology in recent discussion, commonly concern on cultural and intellectual feature of postmodern context. This article historically reviews the development of practical theology as an academic discipline and searches for a new direction of practical theology in postmodern context. In postmodern society, practical theologians and the congregational leaders can invite individuals to have a conversation with Christian traditions and lead them to interpret everyday experiences in light of such dialogue and to construct existential meanings of life events. In postmodern context in which neither a hierarchical view of pastoral authority nor a modern perspective of religion as "meta-narrative" is accepted, the congregational leaders can help people formulate and reformulate their interpretation of self, work, family and ethical obligation in society based on Christian values and on dimension of life's ultimate meaning. In highly pluralized and uncertain postmodern world, where individuals are free yet anxious in choosing their own value and life path, an important task of practical theology is to provide interpretive guide to lead people to construct a meaningful "life project." Also in order to grasp multi-dimensional complexity of life and offer specific and practical suggestions in particular context, practical theology need to engage in cross-disciplinary dialogue. Particularly, I introduced transversal model of cross-disciplinary dialogue based on postfoundational rationality.
