Since mid-1990, Malaysia is continuously pursuing a policy of becoming one of the world economic superpowers by year 2020 under the strong leadership of the prime minister Mahatir. The top priority of Malaysia economic policy is put on the area of information technology(IT) with a variety of benefits and concessionary measures for foreign direct investments to Malaysia, which makes Malaysia one of the most attractive country for the Korean IT-related firms' foreign direct investment and/or mutual cooperation.
In this paper, it has been tried to scrutinize the Korean IT-related firms' most suitable way of penetrating the Malaysia IT market including direct investments. The findings are as follows. Firstly, Malaysia can be developed as the strategic foothold for the whole southeast Asian market including China. Secondly, Malaysia IT market is attractive for the Korean firms' export of internet contents and educational softwares as subcontractors of two country's governments. Thirdly, a joint venture(JV) strategy between the Korean firms in the fields of business-to-business(b-to-b) or business-to-company(b-to-c) is highly recommendable. Fourth, a long-term planning seems to be essential in penetrating the immature market like that of Malaysia IT market. Finally, a penetration strategy in collaboration with government and the world-wide chinese society also seems to be recommendable.
