정치학과 젠더 = Political Science and Gender : An Understanding of Gender as an Analytical Category

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목적은 양성평등, 여성인권, 여성주의 인식론, 여성운동 등으로 혼용되고 있는 젠더정치의 개념을 바로 이해하는 것이다. 젠더가 사회분석의 범주와 과정이라는 의미와 방법 및 주요한 이론적 성과들을 살펴봄으로써 젠더정치의 이론적 특징을 살피고 있다. 이 과정에서 젠더정치에 대한 오해와 혼용을 초래하는 원인들로 여성주의 지식의 주관성과 부분성(partiality) 문제, 젠더 본 질주의, 젠더가 갖고 있는 친밀함(intimacy)의 속성 등을 설명하고 있다. 또한 젠더정치 인식의 근본적인 질문을 성 변수와 성 인지로부터 피억압자의 경험과 지식으로 전환할 것을 제안하고 있다.
젠더정치는 여성을 독립적인 정치행위자로 설정한 연구나 공적 영역에서 나타나는 성차 연구에 국한되지 않는다. 젠더정치 연구는 사회관계의 한자원인 젠더를 분석의 범주로 이해하고 사회제도, 정치현상, 행태에서 사회적 관계로 작동하고 있는 젠더(위계)의 속성과 복잡함을 분석하는 것이다. 민족국가와 젠더의 관계, 범주의 정치에 대한 비판, 교차성 이론을 예로 들어 젠더정치의 문제제기와 이론적 특성들을 살피고 있다. 궁극적으로 이 글은 젠더정치가 여성의 입장을 추가하여 정치학의 지평을 확장시켰다는 점에서라기보다 사회현상과 관계에 대한 근본적으로 다른 인식과 분석의 틀을 제공하고 있다는 데 의의가 있음을 설명하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aims of this article are to clarify gender politics (which has often been confused with gender equality, women’s rights, feminist epistemology, and the feminist movement), to explore what gender as an analytical category means, and to suggest theoretical accomplishments of contemporary gender politics. In the process, this article explores the three reasons for the confusion and misunderstanding of gender politics: the question of the partiality and subjectivity of feminist knowledge, gender essentialism, and gender intimacy. Furthermore, this article suggests the knowledge and experiences of the oppressed as a starting point of feminist epistemology.
Gender politics should not be misunderstood or limited to studies of women-only political actors and studies on gender gap in the public sphere. A study of gender politics is defined as an analysis of the process and complexity of gender, one form of social relationship which operates in every social institution, political behavior, and political phenomena. Intersectional theory, the critique of the politics of categories, and the relationship between nation-state and gender are used as examples of the theoretical accomplishments of contemporary gender politics. This article shows that the implications of gender politics within political science discipline lies not in extending traditional political science through a gendered perspective, but in suggesting a fundamentally different understanding and an analysis of political phenomena.
