A simple, rapid and sensitive fluorometric assay for phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride was developed based on their interacion with I dimethylaminonaphthalene-5-sulfonylchloride(Dansyl chloride) in acetone to yield fluorescent compound, with excitation and emission wavelengths of 350 and 495 nm, respectively.
A study of optimum pH, reaction time, temperature and dansyl chloride concentration is presented. Fluorescence is linear the range 1∼7μg phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride per ml of sample. The fluorescence was stable for at least 2 hours.
Application of the procedure to the analysis of phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride in dosage forms gave an accuracy 1∼4%.
