제2차 세계대전 이후 영어권 및 불어권 국가에 있어 지역지리학의 발달 = Development of Regional Geography in English- and French-speaking Countries since World War II

국문 초록 (Abstract)

근대 지리학이 성립한 이래 지리학의 핵심으로 굳건히 자리 잡아 온 지역지리학은 제2차 세계대전 이후 비과학적이라는 비판을 받았을 뿐만 아니라 폐기되어야 한다는 주장까지도 받았다. 특히 지역지리학은 1950년대에 들어서서 계량혁명을 거치면서 논리실증주의를 바탕으로 한 공간분석 지리학이 등장하면서 지리학의 주변으로 밀려 나기도 했다. 그러나 지리학 내에서 지역지리학의 의의가 꾸준히 강조되고 그 필요성이 제기되면서, 1980년대 이후 지역지리학은 르네상스를 맞이하기도 했다. 이 논문은 영어권 및 불어권 국가들을 중심으로 지역지리학의 역사적 변천과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 제2차 세계대전 이후 지역지리학에 대한 비판과 함께 지역지리학에 대해 제기된 문제점들을 먼저 살펴보고, 이를 뒤이어 1980년대를 거치면서 새롭게 대두한 신지역지리학와 함께 그 발전흐름을 고찰하고자 한다.

Regional geography, once considered the centerpiece of modern geography, was not only criticized as unscientific after World War II, but also argued that it needed to be abolished. In particular, regional geography was pushed into the margins of geography by the ‘Quantitative Revolution,’ when the so-called ‘spatial geography’ based on logical positivism emerged. However, since the 1980s, regional geography has even experienced a renaissance, emphasizing the importance of regional geography within geography. This article examines the historical process of changes in regional geography with a focus on English- and French-speaking countries. In addition to the criticism of regional geography after the Second World War, the problems raised in regional geography were first explained, and since the 1980s the new regional geography and its direction of development has been analyzed.
