지정된 포토존(Photo Zone) 사진의 집단기억에 관한 연구 : ‘공통된 자리’ 작품론

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사진을 찍는 행위는 살아있는 시간 동안 흔적을 남기고자 하는 욕망은 삶이 유한 한 것에서 출발했다고 볼 수 있다. 언제까지나 기억하고 싶은 순간을 그대도 유지하고자 하는 욕구는 시간의 흐름을 정지시키는 작업으로 나타난다. 현재에 살고 있을 때, 흐름이 아닌 다른 시간이 있었다는 것을 사진을 꺼내듦으로 인해서 분명히 의식하고 어떤 시간을 살았다는 것을 보여준다. 이것이 잊고 있던 지나간 순간을 떠오르게 하는 기억 환기의 시작이 되고 기억의 유물이 되는 것이다.
가정에서의 사진 촬영은 가정생활의 의례 중 하나가 되었다. 가정의 화목과 사랑, 행복의 일련의 의미들이 실제로 어떠하든 비교적 완벽한 모습으로 남겨 후에 다시 꺼내보더라도 계속해서 그 평화를 인정받을 수 있게 되는 역할을 하는 것이다. 그리고 더 이상 지속되지 않는 순간을 단편적이지만 상징적으로 소유할 수 있도록 해준다. 사진은 항상 들고 다니다가 자기 가족의 결속력을 보여주려고 꺼내놓는 일련의 이미지이기도 한 것이다. 또한 대부분의 시간을 경제활동에 쏟고 있는 바쁜 이들이 여행을 떠났을 때도 증명사진과 다름없는 사진들을 강박적으로 촬영한다. 이렇게 만들어지는 사진은 그 사람이 떠났던 여행의 이미지를 만들어낸다. 그리고 나중에 그 사진을 꺼내들고 자신이 바쁜 이상을 벗어나 낯선 어딘가를 다녀왔고, 어떤 값진 시간을 보냈다는 것을 보여줄 것이다. 이런 대중 아마추어 사진에서 보이는 공통된 성질은 사회가 만들어놓은 일정 수준의 계층을 나타내고 있다는 것이다. 동시대의 문화를 소비한 이들이 암묵적으로 규정된 이미지에 어느 정도 합류하고 나면 낙오되지 않음을 안심할 수 있는 상태가 되고 만족할만한 상태로 보존하는 것이다.

주제를 잘 나타내기 위해 촬영지로 선택한 곳은 가능한 빠른 시간에 한군데라도 더 들러보고 사진을 찍으려는 관광의 전형적 양상을 보이는 서울시티투어버스의 코스와 테마파크 내의 포토존(Photo zone)들이다. 이곳에는 관광객의 관광패턴을 반영한 사진 찍기 좋은 장소와 지점을 표시해 놓은 표식들이 함께 있다. 그리고 웹상에서 개인이 경험과 친목, 정보적 성격을 담아 올려놓은 이미지들을 수집하였다. 동시대의 한 집단에서 쉽게 이해되는 상투적인 이미지들을 가지고 실상을 드러내고자 수집행위가 이루어졌고 이들을 겹쳐지게 해 흐릿한 이미지를 만들었다. 경험한 것들은 지나간 시간만큼 잊히고 변형되기 마련이다. 떠올리는 기억들도 현실에서 만큼 선명하지 않다. 이것이 과거를 떠올릴 때 영향을 주어 과거를 아득한 것으로 느끼게 한다. 대신 기억은 남아있는 흔적을 바탕으로 재구성 재창조되어 새롭게 변화를 거듭하게 된다. 그래서 흔적이 남아있는 한 기억되는 존재로 남는 것이다.
본인의 작업은 기념사진을 기반으로 그것을 예술의 맥락으로 위치시킴으로써 사회구조 속에서 갖는 여러 기능과 효과들을 재검토하는 것에 중점을 두고 있다. 기념사진이 갖는 상투성, 전형성에 기대면서 사진이 우리의 일상의 삶에 어떻게 침투해 들어가 있고 사람들의 사고방식과 어떻게 관계 맺는가를 생각해보는 기회를 마련해 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The act of photographing is an expression of our desire originated from our mortality to leave our traces we have made while we are living. Human desire to keep the moment they are willing to remember as it is good is expressed in the work stopping the flow of time. As we take our photos out, we can clearly recognize that there exists another time that is different from the present moment we live now, and it also shows we actually lived in a certain time in the past. This is the start to recollect the memory which reminds us of the past moment we have forgotten, and becomes the remains of memory.
Taking family photos has become a kind of rite in family life. No matter how a series of things such as family’s harmony, love, and happiness means in real, they try to leave their comparably perfect appearances so that the photos can confirm such peace the family had again and again whenever they take them out to see. Moreover, they also let the family possess the moment that does not last any more fragmentarily but symbolically. Photos also can be a series of images that we pick out to show our family bonds as we carry them around all the time. When those who are busy and spend most of their time for economic activities go traveling, they take pictures compulsively which seem no more than the identification photos. The pictures produced in this way generate the images of the travel the person experienced. Later, he would take them out to show he went to some place new escaping from his busy life and spent some valuable time. The common characteristics shown in those amateur pictures taken by ordinary people reflect a certain class which the society has made. Those who consumed the contemporary culture joined in the images defined implicitly to some extent, they will feel secure since they keep pace with others, and the photos will be kept in a satisfactory state.

The places of photography selected to express the subject effectively are the photo zones in the Seoul City Tour Bus course and Theme Park where people show a typical aspect of tourism, that is, they are eager to visit more places and take pictures as promptly as possible. Those places have signals that indicate good places and spots for taking photos as reflecting their visitors’ tour pattern. It also collected images posted on the web, containing personal experience and harmony and informative aspects. The collecting act was carried out to expose the actual state with stereotyped images easily understood in a contemporary group, and it created vague images as making them overlapped. The things experienced are forgotten and transformed naturally as time goes by. The memory recalled is not as clear as it was in reality. These things have an influence when we look back on our past and make us feel the past is dim. However, memory does repeat new changes as it gets reconstructed and re-created based on the traces that remain. Therefore, as long as traces remain, something is remembered.
This author’s work focuses on reviewing their functions and effects in the social structure as locating commemorative photos in the context of art. It will give us an opportunity to see how commemorative pictures penetrate our daily lives as they depend on their conventionality and typicality and consider how they relate to our way of thinking.
