The 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project in Artificial Intelligence, or the Dartmouth Workshop, is often considered the origin of artificial intelligence. The workshop purportedly played a pivotal role in establishing the “brand name” of AI and forming a group of AI researchers adhering to a unified paradigm, according to the conventional account of AI history. The significance of the event in the early development of AI is difficult to overlook. Nevertheless, it is crucial to note that the origins of AI cannot be solely attributed to the conference held at Dartmouth College in the summer of 1956, as both the intellectual and social foundations of this field had already been developing before this event. The development of AI was a long and gradual process. In addition to placing the early development of AI—often portrayed as a direct outcome of the Dartmouth Workshop—into a broader context, this article attempts to shed light on the circumstances that led to the rise of the origin myth. The myth emerged against the backdrop of several obstacles encountered by the AI community throughout the 1970s, serving as a means of establishing the scientific legitimacy of AI through the practice of “boundary work.” It was a “mythology” that obscured the interplay between technoscience and society, reducing the history of AI to a narrative consisting of discoveries and revolutions. Acknowledging the mythological aspect of the Dartmouth origin myth, this paper calls for an alternative historiography of AI that aligns more with discussions in science and technology studies concerning the sociomaterial networks surrounding AI.
