Considered at the viewpoint of the national economy, importance of small and medium enterprise (hereafter referred to as SME,) is, needless to say, enormous. In the history of fast economic growth of Korea, majority of governmental support had been rendered to large enterprises, consequently resulting in comparative inferiority of SME. Assembly plants and component makers were inevitably requested to look for their works from large industries, thus SME had suffered from increasing financial burden while large enterprises enjoyed growth of their business scales. Toleration with this passing phase lasted as long as the national economy was developing, but it could no longer exist when Korean economy arrived at international competition level, joining OECD and keeping pace with advanced countries in variety of economic activities. Now that overall industrial structure is rapidly changing, one industrial field will not advance without help of other associated fields. Coalition with SME turned up to be one of the essential factors of management for large enterprises, to secure optimal supplies of material and engineering, while SME felt requisition for raising its functional standpoint in the nationwide economic environment at the same time.
This study pursued to define present status of SME, focusing at the small and medium manufacturers' roles and functions in the national economy, and comparing with overseas modelings of similar economic backgrounds. The study concludes that the SME will eventually lead total economy in the region it stands, and it suggests schemes to vitalize management of the small and medium enterprise, which includes,
1) growing leadership of the CEO.
2) respecting knowledge and information.
3) pursuing profit and respecting credit.
4) respecting human resources.
5) corresponding with global standard
This study also suggests schemes to strengthen competitiveness of SME, which includes,
1) specializing business characters.
2) strategic coalition with relative concerns.
3) applying networks with other specialized enterprises.
4) applying electronic business system.
