석장리유적 발굴과 구석기고고학의 과제와 전망 = Excavations at Seokjang-ri and Korean Paleolithic Archaeology Revisited

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이글은 석장리라는 중요한 구석기 유적을 통해 한국 구석기고고학을 학사적으로 조망한 것이다. 학사적인 시각을 통해 유적이 언제 조사되었는지를 확인하는 것에 머물지 않고, 연구의 시대적인 배경과 당시의 학문적인 패러다임을 궁구한다. 1964년 석장리 유적 발굴은 한국 고고학사의 획기적인 일이었으며, 이로써 연구 자료를 갖춘 구석기고고학이 출발하였다고 할 수 있다. 학사적으로는 이미 일제강점기부터 구석기시대에 대한 관심과 자료의 존재 가능성에 대한 적극적인 시각이 있었으며, 석장리 발굴이 지닌 의의 역시 그 연장선상에서 이해할 수 있다. 석장리 유적 발굴은 구석기고고학의 성장을 압축해서 보여주면서도 오늘날 연구자에게 많은 과제를 던져주기도 한다. 한국 구석기고고학에서는 유적의 자연 및 문화적인 형성과정에 대한 더 면밀한 검토가 필요하다. 그리고 고고학사와 이론의 발전에서 구석기고고학이 중심적인 역할을 하였음을 고려할 때 한국 구석기 고고학 역시 이론과 방법론에 더 깊은 관심을 가져야 한다. 특히 석기 및 유물군을 이해하는 데 자료를 남긴 수렵채집 사회에 대한 이론적이고 방법론적인 시각이 중요하다. 정지된 물적 자료로부터 역동적인 과거 인간행위에 대한 진술을 하고자 하는 고고학자에게 현존 수렵채집 사회에서 관찰되는 식생활과 이동, 공간 점유, 사회네 트워크와 관련된 패턴은 중요하고도 필수적인 도구이며, 이를 토대로 구석기고고학 관련 자료를 더 포괄적으로 이해할 수 있다. 또한 세부 편년을 세우고 수렵채집민의 이동성과 환경 변화에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 후기 구석 기시대 유적 점유의 역동성을 연구하는 데 더 많은 관심을 가져야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The present essay attempts to provide a historical overview of archaeological excavations at Seokjang-ri which began in 1964. While a disciplinary history may take a form in which a series of important events were chronicled, this essay emphasizes paradigmatic movements and sociopolitical settings in which a specific discovery was made and accepted by the scientific community. It is suggested that the discovery of Paleolithic materials and subsequent excavations can better be understood from the long history of interests in the Paleolithic from the early 20 th century. The excavation of the first Paleolithic site at Seokjang-ri in South Korea provided archaeologists tangible material evidence for the first time. Many issues still remain unsolved, however, and we need to critically evaluate the legacy of the Seokjang-ri excavation. Especially, natural and cultural site formation processes are need to be fully understood and carefully discussed in the archaeological reports and papers. Furthermore, understanding of hunter-gatherer society and behavioral patterns and diversity, such as subsistence economy, mobility, and social networks, is always a required tool for Paleolithic archaeologists who try to make sense out of static material remains. We also need to reconstruct and explain detailed chronology and occupational history during the Late Paleolithic.
