독일 이주 노동 서사의 현재적 의미－ 독일 이주 간호사 관련 소설을 중심으로 = The Contemporary Significance of Narratives on German Migrant Labor — Focusing on Novels Depicting Korean Nurses in Germany

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1960년대 독일 이주 노동은 남성의 경우는 광부, 여성의 경우는 간호사를 중심으로 이루어졌다. 이 논문은 1960년대 독일 이주 노동의 역사를 바탕으로 한 서사들에 대한 현대적 의미를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 간호사들의 이주 노동을 다룬 서사들에 초점을 맞추어 그것이 보여주는 당시 현실이 구체적으로 어떠했는가를 여러 기록들을 바탕으로 조명하고, 그것을 다시 읽는 현재의 관점에서의 의미를 재고찰해보고자 한다.
1960년대의 독일 이주 노동에 대해 국가경제적 관점에서의 공헌을 강조하는 경우도 적지 않았다. 이에 대한 정확한 사실 확인도 중요하다. 그리고 무엇보다 국가의 이름으로 각 개인의 삶이 감춰지는 일이 없어야 한다. 독일 이주 노동자의 이야기가 등장하는 여러 소설 작품들 중, 조정래의 <한강>, 공지영의 <별들의 들판>은 독일 이주 노동자들이 국가경제발전의 공헌자이거나 희생자였음을 강조한다. 반면 김순실의 <유령가족>이나 변소영의 <거의 맞음>, 백수린의 <눈부신 안부>는 건강한 주체로서의 각 개인의 삶을 주목하였다. 우리는 독일 이주 간호사들의 삶을 도전적 주체로서의 여성 서사라는 관점 위에서 살펴볼 때, 현재적 공감에 도달할 수 있을 것이다.

In the 1960s, Korean labor migration to Germany primarily involved male miners and female nurses. This paper aims to examine the contemporary significance of narratives based on the historical experiences of Korean migrant laborers in Germany during this period. Specifically, it focuses on the narratives surrounding Korean nurses, shedding light on the socio-historical realities they faced, as documented in various records, and reevaluating these narratives from a present-day perspective.
Discussions of Korean migrant labor in Germany have often emphasized their economic contributions from a national perspective. While verifying these historical accounts is important, it is equally crucial to ensure that individual lives are not overshadowed by national narratives. Among the many novels featuring the stories of German immigrant workers, Jo Jung-rae’s The Han River and Gong Ji-young’s Field of Stars emphasize the role of Korean migrant laborers as contributors to national economic development or as victims of sacrifice. In contrast, Kim Sun-sil’s Ghost Family, Byun So-young’s Almost Right, and Baek Su-rin’s Dazzling Regards highlight the personal agency and resilience of individual women.
By examining the lives of Korean migrant nurses in Germany through the lens of female narratives of agency and challenge, we can foster a deeper contemporary understanding and empathy for their experiences.
