Nowadays banking industry has entered “Low growth-Low profit”, which caused keen competition among banks to occupy leading position. Finally loan-deposit margin, profit from traditional Bank business, has decreased sharply, therefore managements are concentrating on increasing the earnings of non-interest. For instance, they are investing great funds to Private Banking, which manages HNWI’s(High Net Worth Individuals; who hold a certain great amount of money, for example more than 10 billion won in cashable assets) financial portfolio directly, in addition to develop products and services responding to their needs.
However, it is very time-consuming process to grow up as a core private banker and if so, it is extremely rare to be recognized as a real professional in the Private Banking industry. This researchable at figuring out the procedure how professional PB, leading great performance as well, has grown up and settled down, in doing so we are going to look into common factors among them. For this study, we choose qualitative research method and in-depth study of face-to-face talk. I also selected phenomenological research method in data analysis which is more suitable to figure out each subject’s history and understand its meaning.
Forte study, I researched participants who worked or are working for more than 15-year in the banking related industry and experienced Private Banker for more than 7-year at the same time. Every subject is also “Bubujang” (over 3rd titled senior manager) in the bank, recognized financial certification holder such as CFP(Certificated for Financial Planning), and plural winner from local and regional company. They have worked for 20.84 years on average.
In this research, I classified Private Banker’s professional development procedure; entire process that individuals join a bank and plant themselves as a recognized private bankers, into Adaptation-phase, Competence-phase and Proficiency-phase according to Model of Domain Learning, Alexander(2003).
Firstly, Adaptation-phase included that banker acquired limited knowledge, and solved problems as a beginner. Normally it was the period within 5 years after entering a bank although it depended on each subject. Secondly, Competence-phase indicated the period around promotion to a manager. In this stage, people experienced qualitative and quantitative improvement in their knowledge. Once they had been assigned to some tasks they could apply in-depth knowledge and basic knowledge together. Finally, Proficiency-phase, recognized as an expert and recorded great performance, was when they got a promotion to a manager, and passed about 2 to 3 years. Especially, 8 to 13 people answered they believed Proficiency-phase was 10 years after working, which supported‘Ten-year-rule, Simon(1973)’ to a certain degree.
Moreover, figured out proficiency consist of seven factors such as knowledge, experience, strategic sales skill, problem-solving ability, creativity and enjoying work. These factors appeared on the all participants equally.
Necessarily this research just covered Private Banker’s professional development stage and factor, hence, it did not explain other influenced constituents, for example, personal and surroundings factors. Therefore, further study will be required.
