제국과 음악. 식민지시기 일본제국과 독일제국을 잇는 음악가들

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 제국과 음악이 어떻게 서로 작용하는지 밝히고자 하는 것이다. 한편에서는 정치적 상황이 음악인들의 이동을 강요했고, 다른 한편에서는 음악에의 욕망이 음악인들을 반대방향으로 이동하게 한 이중적 현상을 ‘초국가적’ 제국이라는 틀을 고려하면서 서술해 보려는 것이다. 지금도 그렇듯이, 동아시아인들이 서양음악을 배우러 유럽으로 유학가는 현상은 당연시되다시피 잘 알려져 있지만, 2차대전시기에 동아시아로 도피해 온 유럽의 망명음악가들이 있었다는 사실은 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 일방적인 방향이 아니라, ‘양방향’의 배경에서 일본제국이 만들어 놓은 다리와 길을 따라 독일제국으로 들어갔던 동아시아 음악인들의 음악활동을 바라본다면, 그 의미가 달라질 수 있다.
이 연구는 결국 식민지와 제국 시기, 동아시아에서 서양음악수용의 역사를 큰 틀에서 그려내어 현재 일어나고 있는 동아시아에서의 서양음악 현상에 대한 깊은 이해를 가능하게 할 것이다.

Empire and music. Transnational exchange of Musicians between the Japanese Empire and the Third Reich:
This study explores how music and Empires in East and West relate during the 1920~1945. It is well known that the Japanese people were the largest group among the East asian musicians who had studied ‘Western Music’ in Germany, especially in Berlin, during the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. However, it is unknown that many jewish musicians exiled from Europe to Shanghai and Japan in the 1930th, during WWII. Why did they come to East Asia where European music was almost non existing? How could they work as musicians and teachers in Shanghai or Tokyo?
On the one hand, the political circumstance in Europe forced jewish musicians to leave their own culture and home. On the other hand, japanese music students went to Germany to study music, especially to Berlin.
This study explores how the Japanese music students in Belrin and Jewish exiled musicians in East Asia were able to build an transnational and imperial cycle, which combines the Japanese Empire and the Third Reich, by analyzing German, Japanese and Korean documents in the archive of the Univesität der Künste Berlin, news papers as well as essays and memories.
