제도와 문화, 그리고 민주주의: 비판적 고찰

Authoritarian reversals or uncertainties of the sustainability of democracy in some countries may be accounted for by fragile democratic institutions or by political culture that is incompatible with democracy. Arend Lijphart and Ronald Inglehart have raised the issue of institutions and culture as prerequisites for democracy. This paper critically evaluates Lijphart’s institutionalist approach and Inglehart’s culturalist approach to democracy. Using macro-level data as well as survey data, we empirically assess the generalizability of each approach and critically engages in each approach’s causal logic.
