사회조사방법을 통한 재외한인연구 = Social Research Methods for the Study of Overseas Koreans

The study of overseas Koreans is a systematic and empirical scholarly study about overseas Koreans. Because of its comprehensive and multi-disciplinary nature, it requires various research methods and thus an integrated approach that synthesizes qualitative and qualitative methods is desirable. The study of overseas Koreans can be approached from the perspectives of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, but in this article I focus on social research methods, especially survey methods, as a useful methodology for the study of overseas Koreans. As I review critically existing literature of overseas Koreans, I find that current research methods have the problems of the low degree of representation of research findings due to the use of non-probability samples, the low level of comparability of research findings, the lack of standardized measurements and indices, the low level of analysis that remains at a level of descriptive statistics, the use of improper question items, and the intervention of a researcher's values in his or her study. To ameliorate these problems, we need to collect scientific and probabilistic samples, conduct comparable inter-country surveys by using the same research tools, develop value-neutral and reliable and valid question items, integrate quantitative and qualitative research methods, and to use reliable secondary data of government and private research institutions of foreign countries.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

재외한인연구는 해외에 거주하는 한인에 관한 체계적이고 경험적인 학술연구이다. 재외한인연구는 학문 특성상 종합적이고 다 학문적 접근을 필요로 하고 방법론적으로 현지연구와 비교연구의 특성을 갖는다. 이런 이유로 재외한인연구를 위한 연구방법은 특정연구방법에 편중하기보다는 다양한 연구방법들을 상호보완적으로 활용하는 열린 자세가 필요하다. 재외한인연구는 인문학, 사회과학, 자연과학적 차원에서 접근할 수 있는데, 본 논문에서는 사회조사방법, 특히 서베이조사를 통한 재외한인연구 방법론에 대해서 논의하였다. 기존의 재외한인 관련 사회조사방법을 비판적으로 검토하면 대체로 비 확률표본 사용에 의한 대표성 결여, 비교 가능성 결여, 표준화된 척도 부재, 기술통계 수준의 분석, 부적절한 질문 문항 연구자들의 주관적 가치관 개입 등의 문제들을 안고 있다. 이런 문제들을 개선하기 위해 과학적, 확률표집을 시도하고, 국제간 비교 가능한 서베이조사를 실시하고, 표준화된 척도를 개발하고, 가치중립적이고 신뢰도와 타당도 높은 질문 문항을 개발하고, 양적 연구와 질적 연구의 통합을 추구하고, 외국의 공신력 있는 정부 또는 민간기관의 2차 자료를 적극 활용하는 노력이 필요하다.
