몸의 침묵 = The Silence of the Body

The main aim of this paper is to explore the existence and nature of the hidden body as integral part of the self, which does not say, and cannot be said in our own language. Subsisting beneath our consciousness, this hidden body has been, and will always be indispensable part of myself. However, it lets us know its existence only by resisting or interrupting my conscious will or action. This counter-action does not work like just a physical force or obstacle imposed from outside. Instead, it comes from within myself. This shows that the hidden body has accrued its own history beneath our consciousness, which cannot be narrated in our language, and thus does not allow any direct access at a conscious level.
To make this point I draw on two major empirical findings. First, as Walter Cannon earlier observed, most of my bodily organs, such as heart, lungs, intestines function outside my consciousness, while regulating body temperature, secretion of hormones, or blood stream. All these workings are going on continuously throughout our life. Second, as most cognitive scientists today would confirm, 95% of the brain function works below our consciousness. Importantly, this process is neither temporary nor eventual. And this composes the very nature of our brain process. I suggest that this ongoing process accrue its own history within me beneath my consciousness.
This stubborn inscrutability of the hidden body is not to be explained away or trivialized, but constitutes an ineluctable part of our cognitive process. This shows that either any attempt to reach a clear and distinct knowing of the very essence of the self in a speculative manner or any attempt to de-construct it out from the essence is the expression of excessive philosophical cravings. We are rather expected to live with this inscrutable self, while achieving better sense of life as a meaning making process.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 주된 목적은 우리의 의식에 알려지지 않은 또 다른 몸의 존재를 밝히려는 것이다. 이 ‘숨겨진 몸’은 우리의 언어로 말하지 않으며, 또 우리의 언어로 말해질 수 없다는 점에서 ‘침묵하는 몸’이다. 침묵하는 몸은 우리 자신의 본래적 일부를 이루면서도 오직 ‘저항’을 통해서만 우리에게 알려진다. 침묵하는 몸은 우리의 의도나 의지에 저항하는 방식으로 스스로의 존재를 드러낸다. 침묵하는 몸의 저항은 우리 안에서 비롯된다는 점에서 외재적인 물리적 저항과는 분명히 구분된다. 침묵하는 몸의 존재를 뒷받침해 주는 두 가지 핵심적인 연구는 두 갈래로 나누어진다. 캐넌은 일찍이 우리의 몸이 체온, 호르몬, 혈류, 혈당을 우리의 의식과 상관없이 스스로 조절한다는 사실을 발견했다. 최근의 인지과학적 탐구는 우리 인지의 95%가 무의식의 영역에서 작동한다는 사실을 밝혀 주었다. 필자는 몸의 이러한 지속적 작용이 일회적으로 소멸하는 대신에 축적된 역사를 형성한다고 보았으며, 그것은 특정한 조건 하에서 저항으로 나타남으로써 비로소 우리의 의식에 포착된다고 보았다. 침묵하는 몸의 존재를 밝히는 것은 우리 자신은 물론 타자에 대한 지식이나 이해가 근원적으로 제약되어 있다는 사실을 밝히는 일이다. 그것이 사실이라면 우리 자신과 타자에 대한 완결된 지식을 가정하는 모든 이론은 과도한 철학적 열망의 산물이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 불투명성 속에서도 우리의 몸에 대한 유의미한 자기인식이 지속되는 한 우리의 모든 지식을 근원적으로 해체할 수 있을 것이라는 해체론적 시각 또한 과도한 이론적 선언이라고 할 수 있다. 몸의 침묵은 우리가 스스로의 불안정성-불완전성이라는 근원적 조건을 받아들이고 그것으로부터 ‘의미 만들기’의 실제적 구조에 대한 탐구로 나아갈 것을 요청한다.
