      This study explores problems which current environmental education has and the directions of research for environmental education. The study discusses the relationship between development and environment. It also introduces American and Japanese environmental education in school, and presents the actual conditions and tasks of current environmental education.
      Many scholars emphasize the dynamic and interactive relationship between development and environment. They content that environmental problems from economic growth are urgent and have to be solved by varietal methods such as the development and application of new energy. However, the most important solution for environmental problems is through education including formal education in the level of primary, secondary, and higher education, and nonformal education for adults. The main characteristics of environmental education in the United States and Japan are the development of programs for environmental education, education for teachers environmental education in communities.
      Even if many approaches for environmental education in our country has been planned and executed, they still have lots of problems. In order to improve the effects of environmental education, the following tasks should be done. First, education for understanding and knowledge about environment is needed. Second, various programs for environmental education should be developed and operated. Third organization in charge of environmental education should be cooperated each other. Forth, experts for environmental education should be trained and cultivated in the level of primary, secondary, and higher education. Fifth, various programs and teaching methods for environmental education in each level of education should be developed and executed. Sixth, various materials for environmental education should be developed and disseminated. Finally, enough funds for environmental education should be established and supported.
