      The purpose of this study is to examine Lee Neung Hwa’s life and activities by focusing on his pro-Japanese and anti-national activities. I also investigate the Wonhwa of the Silla Dynasty and their relationship with the Gisaeng, the social attributes of Cheongwannyeo from the story of Kim Yu Shin, and the existence of prostitution during the Silla Dynasty. Lee Neung Hwa served in a high-ranking position in the Japanese Empire and won medals and rewards during the Japanese colonial period. Lee Neung Hwa also actively participated in the Korean History Compilation Committee, pro-Japanese Buddhist organizations, pro-Japanese societies, and pro-Japanese groups. His contributions led to a distortion of Korean history, and he advocated colonialism. Lee Neung Hwa even wrote and dedicated a Chinese poem praising the Japanese emperors and rationalizing the Japanese empire’s colonial rule of the Joseon Dynasty. In other words, Lee Neung Hwa went beyond simply participating in compiling a distorted history of Joseon. Instead, Lee Neung Hwa was pro-Japanese and anti-nationalist who carried out pro-Japanese activities in a practical and detailed manner. The Wonhwa of the Silla Dynasty refers to women of high rank with authority over the Jingol. They were in a close relationship with the royal court. The Wonhwa is clearly different from the Gisaeng. Thus, Lee’s claim that the Wonhwa and Gisaeng were the same is untrue and merely a personal opinion, lacking detailed reasoning. In addition, Lee Neung Hwa regarded the Hwarang as male prostitutes who committed sodomy; he regarded Taekgyeon as a traditional game of winning male prostitutes and he regarded a Nangdo as a person who enjoys brothels. However, these were part of Lee’s intended and planned distortion of history and they severely degraded the essential characteristics of the Hwarang, Nangdo, and Taekgyeon. Cheongwannyeo’s social standing was that of female servant. Lee In Ro, who was the first person to record Cheongwannyeo, regarded Cheongwannyeo’s social standing as equivalent to that of a Gisaeng. However, Lee Neung Hwa distorted Cheongwannyeo as “a prostitute involved in prostitution.” He also claimed that “the Silla Dynasty approved prostitution” and pointed out that state-regulated prostitution during the Japanese colonial period originated from the Silla Dynasty, without grounds or logical validity. 『Joseonhaeeohwasa』 claimed that Cheongwannyeo equals prostitute and Eumbang equals a house for prostitution, and that the Silla Dynasty approved prostitution. These allegations were not true. The truth was distorted by Lee Neung Hwa.

      The purpose of this study is to examine Lee Neung Hwa’s life and activities by focusing on his pro-Japanese and anti-national activities. I also investigate the Wonhwa of the Silla Dynasty and their relationship with the Gisaeng, the social attributes of Cheongwannyeo from the story of Kim Yu Shin, and the existence of prostitution during the Silla Dynasty.
