      A Study on Improvement of Pedestrian Environment
      for Region Revitalization
      - A case study of Cheong Gye Cheon -

      Including Seoul, the development of modern cities are growing rapidly. In process modernization, a right of pedestrians became secondary to automobiles. Therefore, to offer the comfort and convenience of city life and bring vitality to the external environment, pedestrian street will need to appear; a city image with emphasis in terms of pedestrian walks and not the strong exclusion of pedestrian rights over the current industrialized urban environment.

      City traffic planning mainly depending on automobiles has emphasized to design space for automobile traffic and parking, which has caused pedestrians to be driven to narrow space. As a result, it has neglected outdoor activities of human and visual pleasure, and has provided walking space only for its purpose of passing rather than a stroll, thinking and communication. But pedestrian street area is activity and commercial transaction in commercial district are core social and economical activities, which play a crucial role in formation and utilization of urban space for human.

      This study attempts to analyze 'the pedestrian street of Cheong Gye Cheon'. A point of view region revitalization analyze through the influence of improvement of pedestrian environment.

      Major results of this study can be summarized as follows :

      First, in case of foreign study, the pedestrian street development block is emerging to be a very important element to live everyday life. The composition of walking axis and assurance of walking space are major elements to make Pedestrian environments more pleasant. Therefore it is needed to compose a pedestrian street road systematically.

      Second, pedestrian street pattern is shown difference by scale of the urban formation, buildings and stores and method that use intermediate domain in city core. And the pedestrian street in the commercial zone is ability conflicting interests, can be an effective way of shifting social conflicts into integration. So that improvement of Pedestrian Environment is contribution which region revitalization.

      Third, through the survey research, the space required for a pedestrian has been proved crucial. It has been proposed that development of pedestrians street is what is truly needed. Therefore, this paper reasons with the general theories, traffic problems, environmental problems and historical space development that can improve urban activities and region revitalization by developing pedestrian street.

      Pedestrian street that have no cars are presented; both domestic and foreign. Also, the current pedestrian street conditions in domestic pedestrian only roads are observed. Through observation pedestrian street of Cheong Gye Cheon is only a part of roads, the feasibility of pedestrian only road and it potential capability is discussed. Improvements in the street without cars can provide directions for future developments. In addition, this paper has an informative purpose of realizing the consequence pedestrian street through domestic and foreign examples.
