Macroeconomic logistics cost of Korea in 2003 is 90,345 billion Won which is 12.47% of GDP. Compared with 8.25% of USA and 8.15% of Japan in the same period, Korea`s logistic cost takes up the largest part of its GDP. Considering that operating profit ratios in manufacturing companies are around 6%, we can assume that 3~4% differences among the developed countries represent the differences in competitiveness within each country. Transportation cost composes 77% of macroeconomic logistics cost. In the transportation cost, trucking cost takes up the largest part and it is divided into two parts, commercial and non-commercial. Commercial trucking cost can be easily and objectively calculated with some statistics index, but non-commercial trucking cost is very complicated to calculate. It is composed with 4 different categories, material cost, labor cost, expenses and overhead cost. Japan`s transportation cost also has two categories, commercial and non-commercial trucking costs. Japan`s way of calculating non-commercial trucking cost is much simpler than Korea`s. It just multiplies the operating cost and the amount of converted mileages. It has many differences from Korea`s way. So, in this article Korea`s non-commercial trucking costs are calculated as Japan`s way. As a result, the ratio of macroeconomic logistics costs to GDP in Korea is presented as similar to Japan`s one. Because of the inconsistency in estimation, comparing simply macroeconomic logistics cost ratio on GDP with other countries is problematic. It is really important undoubtedly how exactly macroeconomic logistics costs estimates real costs related logistics industry. Besides, however we need of a comparable measure with other countries.
