국문 초록 (Abstract)

19세기말 미국 사회가 독점자본주의 단계로 접어들고 대도시가 등장하여 삶의 양상이 복잡해지면서 미국사회를 총체적으로 그려내는 것이 어려워지게 되었다. 윌리엄 하웰즈는 "새로운 재산의 모험"에서 중산층의 관점에서 하층민을 포함한 뉴욕시의 총제적 모습을 그려내려 시도하지만 루카치나 제임슨의 말하는 총체성의 재현에는 실패한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 하웰즈의 소설은 낙관적인 미국사회에 대한 비전이 거짓임을 드러내는 계기를 지닌다는 점에서 리얼리즘의 성과를 지닌다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In The Education of Henry Adams, the American historian recollected that, struck with the technological innovations exhibited at the Great Exposition at Paris in 1900, he had “lost his arithmetic in trying to figure out the equation between the discoveries and the economics of force” (381). Exemplifying the sense of disorientation brought on by the phenomenal technological change at the turn of the century, Adams’s experience resembles the epistemological confusion that modern man experienced, a hundred years later, in face of the postmodern hyperspace that, as Fredric Jameson observes, “has finally succeeded in transcending the capacities of the individual human body to locate itself, to organize its immediate surroundings perceptually, and cognitively to map its position in a mappable external world” (Postmodernism 44). If what Jameson describes above alludes to the postmodern sublime, Adams’s bewilderment bears an unmistakable resemblance to it. Indeed Joseph Tabbi in his Postmodern Sublime singles out Adams as the forerunner of the postmodern American writers who, expressing their conflicted attitude toward technology, have produced a substantial body of literature about “a technological sublime” (xi).
