Aheewanram(兒戱原覽), a textbook for children, was edited and published by Changhawn(張混) in 1803 at the end of the Chosen Dynasty. The book portrayed practical matters identified in daily lives. This essay tries to disclose the educational significance and characteristics of Aheewanram by analyzing it's content.
There are a number of reasons Changhwan wrote Aheewanram. First he wanted to teach children knowledge geared to daily lives. Second, to teach the summary of the many texts available at that time. Lastly, to emphasize the historicity of knowledge through describing historical sources.
By analyzing the contents of this book we can find out some characteristics of this book a followings. First, this book is characteristic for being organized like an encyclopedia containing experiences and natural phenomena, contrary to the most other traditional (educational) books which were filled with Confucian principles and ethics. Second, this book emphasises solving daily life problems more than any other traditional books. Third, the book deals with a lot of history, geography, and folklore of Korea. Forth, it gives answers to many questions which children may have about natural phenomena. Lastly, it's content structure seems to be identical with that of the modern curriculum.
