Recently, a number of social science fields have increasingly accepted Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). The growing attention to CHAT among social scientists raises some fundamental questions for youth and adolescence researchers. Why has CHAT recently expanded in diverse academic areas? What implications can youth and adolescence researchers draw from the theoretical establishment? Derived from these general inquiries, the current study aims to discuss CHAT in relation to youth and adolescence research, focusing on two epistemological aspects of the theory. First, the study highlights the interdisciplinary foundation of CHAT by elaborating upon the traditions of thought that influenced the emergence and evolution of the theory. Specifically, it illuminates the influences of German gestalt philosophers and Marx, cultural-historical psychology, and several major sociological traditions upon CHAT in order to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the conversations in which the theory has developed. Second, it attempts to provide a systemic overview of CHAT by articulating three fundamental conceptions of mediation, object, and contradiction from the interdisciplinary standpoint. Subsequently, CHAT studies in the youth and adolescence literature are reviewed in an integrative manner. Lastly, the following discussions deal with the strengths and challenges of CHAT as well as its theoretical implications for youth and adolescence research.
