What experiences do citizens have when documenting their own local areas? This study is grounded in the premise that citizen archival activities influence individuals’ perceptions and ways of life, and sets out two research questions: “What affective experiences do citizens encounter during archival activities?” and “How do citizens experience ‘becoming a party’ through affective experiences?” Drawing on the concept of affect, which foregrounds individual emotions and relational dynamics, alongside related theoretical frameworks, the study developed an analytical model for examining the affective experiences of citizen archival activists. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 citizens with archival activity experience in Buk-gu and Yeongdo-gu, Busan, employing qualitative content analysis grounded in a naturalistic inquiry paradigm and a narrative descriptive strategy. The findings reveal that participants had emotional experiences through relationships with both human and non-human affective actors, and underwent changes in perception regarding archival activities, their local communities, and themselves, as well as existential changes encompassing capability growth and relational reconstruction. These affective experiences culminated in the processes of “becoming an archival activist party” and “becoming a local/community party.” This study is significant in that it expands the scope of archival studies by exploring the meaning and value of citizen archival activities, and establishes a practical analytical framework for interpreting and evaluating such activities across diverse field-based contexts.
