The purpose of this study is to analysis the representation method of map scale in regional textbooks. Regional textbook reveals a regional originality through various materials and a map is one of them. A map is the symbol of polity or representation of territory and so it shows the relationship of meaning of the regional. The originality of a certain region presents by relation between its inside and outside. And a specific site in the region is to be its symbolic content. We call the process of this regionalization as territorialization or the scaffolding of space scale and can identify in the map of regional textbooks.
The object of analysis are regional textbooks in Seoul and they published during the 5th - 7th curriculum. The method of analysis is content analysis which is a quantitative approach concerned with categorizing and countering occurrences of elements of content. This study counter occurrences of regional map in the textbooks and argue for meaning of relation among them. The map divide into sub-category according to the representation method of space scale. The sub-categories are local scale, local/regional scale, regional scale, regional/sub-national scale, regional/national scale.
1As a result of analysis, textbooks have no difference in occurrences of regional map. But there are many differences in representation method of regional map and the textbook in the 5th curriculum shows the best of representing the scale of regionalization. Lessons from the result of analysis are as follows. We should consider not only external occurrences of map but also the relational phase of scale, and can reflect on representing the regional identity in regional textbooks.
