고려시대 천추태후의 정치적 활동 = The Political Activities of Cheonchu the Queen Mother in Goryeo

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 『고려사』 후비전에 나타난 천추태후에 관한 기록을 비판적으로 검토하여 천추태후의 정치적 활동을 살피는 데 목적이 있다. 『고려사』 천추태후전에 따르면 천추태후는 김치양과 사통하여 아들을 낳고, 그 아들을 왕위 계승자로 삼으려고 하였다고 한다. 천추태후가 권력과 욕망을 위하여 김치양과 사통하고 왕위를 엿보았다고 보았다. 『고려사』를 편찬한 남성 유학자들은 천추태후를 음란하고 위험한 여성으로 보고 부정적으로 평가하였다.
천추태후와 김치양의 관계는 사적 애정보다 공적 정치의 측면에서 바라보아야 한다. 천추태후는 승려출신이며 외족이었던 김치양을 만나서 불교신앙에 의지하고, 목종의 후원세력을 결집하고자 하였다. 목종이 왕위에 오르자 천추태후는 왕태후에 책봉되었고 김치양은 중앙 정계에 진출하였다. 천추태후와 김치양은 정치적인 동반자 관계를 이루면서 목종대 정국을 이끌어갔다.
목종 12년에 천추태후와 김치양이 그들의 아들을 왕위에 올리기 위하여 불궤를 꾀하였다는 반란설이 제기되었다. 이 반란설은 근거가 충분하지 않다. 천추태후와 김치양은 실제 왕위를 엿보는 어떠한 행동도 취하지 않았고, 목종의 처벌조치도 없었다. 천추태후와 김치양의 반란설은 대량원군을 추대하는 세력이 조작한 소문이라고 볼 수 있다. 목종이 죽고 현종이 즉위함으로써 천추태후는 나쁜 태후의 모습으로 기록되고 평가되었다.

This paper aims to investigate the political activities of Cheonchu the Queen Mother. According to the Goryeosa “Biography of Cheonchu the Queen Mother”, she had an extramarital affair with Kim Chiyang, had a son with him, and tried to have the son succeed the throne. The Confucian scholars who compiled Goryeosa considered Cheonchu as a lecherous and dangerous woman.
The relationship between Cheonchu the Queen Mother and Kim Chiyang should be explored in terms of public political partnership rather than private relationship between a man and a woman. When she met Kim Chiyang who was originally a monk and maternal relative, she relied on belief in Buddhism and tried to consolidate supporters of Mokjong. After Mokjong ascended to the throne, Cheonchu was installed as queen mother and Kim Chiyang obtained a government position and was promoted. Cheonchu and Kim Chiyang maintained their political partnership in Mokjong era.
In the 12th year of reign by Mokjong, 'the theory of revolt by Kim Chiyang' has been raised, which asserted that Cheonchu the Queen Mother and Kim Chiyang had conspired to help their son ascend to the throne. However, Cheonchu and Kim Chiyang did not take any action coveting the throne. Neither did Mokjong take any measure to penalize them. Considering this circumstances, 'the theory of revolt by Kim Chiyang' was a rumor fabricated by a political party who tried to take the crown from Mokjong and hand it over to Hyungjong. As Cheonchu's political opponent Hyunjong acceded to the throne, Cheonchu was recorded and evaluated as a bad queen mother.
