어머니의 수용과 청소년의 공감 발달: 한국과 미국 대학생의 비교 = Effects of Maternal Acceptance on the Development of Empathy for Adolescents: A Comparison of Korean and American University Students

Since most of studies on empathy were based on the Western culture, the effect of cultural variables was not fully investigated. Thus, it was postulated that an intercultural study comparing empathy for adolescents from two radically different child-raring environments would better highlight the possible effects of this variable. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to find the effects of mothers' acceptance on the development of emotional empathy for university students in Korea and America. The responses to the Emotional Empathy Test and the Parental Acceptance Questionnaire of 216 Koreans were compared to those of 136 Americans. American students were more empathic than Korean students, and females were more empathic than males from both groups. Maternal acceptance of American students were higher than those of Korean students. For Korean students, maternal acceptance of males were higher than that of females, but no such sex differences were appeared in American students. The positive effect of maternal acceptance on empathy was appeared to be significant only for Korean female students. And the implications of this study were discussed.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구에서는 한국과 미국의 청소년을 대상으로 어머니의 수용에 대한 지각과 공감의 관계를 검증하여 문화적 영향을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 한국 대학생 216명과 미국 대학생 136명에게 어머니의 수용도 검사와 공감 검사가 실시되었다. 그 결과, 어머니의 수용은 미국 대학생이 한국 학생보다 높았고, 미국과는 달리 한국의 남학생은 여학생보다 어머니를 더 수용적으로 지각하는 경향을 보였다. 공감도 미국 대학생이 한국 학생보다 높게 나타났으며, 두 집단 모두 여학생의 공감이 남학생보다 높았다. 끝으로, 어머니의 수용과 자녀의 공감의 상관은 한국 여학생의 경우에만 긍정적으로 나타났다. 문화적 맥락에서 이와 같은 결과에 관련된 논의가 시도되었다.
