A moral theory involves the attempt to explain the nature of morality. Traditional moral theories were intended to formulate moral principles and rules that represent moral criteria specifying what makes actions right and wrong. Traditional moral theories make a principle founded on the base of the unity thesis, the universal relevance thesis, and the polarity thesis. We could refer to this battery of theses as moral generalism. Moral particularism is opposed to moral generalism. Moral particularists denies that there are any nonmoral features that are fundamental in the way that traditional moral theory takes for granted. Moral particularists suggest that some action could reverse its polarity and some action could be silenced by other action in the other contexts. According to partucularists, there is no fixed set of non-moral features that determine and hence 'shape' the moral landscape. A generalist is commited to relevance atomism, while a particulularist is to holism that the relevance of any nonmoral feature in a context can be affected by the other feature that are presnt in that context. And so, we need moral sensitivity or phronesis to know if some action could have moral relevance and polarity.
Moral particularists seem to succeed in critisizing moral generalism, but need to be complemented by contextualism.
Moral particularism has its implication to moral education. Instead of our over-trusted belief on principles or rules, we need to emphasize the concrets and details of some action. Moral education must complement his deductive or top down approach by way of narrative or inductive approaches. Moral educator should need lots of knowledges about various moral concerns and shoud have a moral vision which is similar to phronesis.
