“고결한 주제, 음란한 언어” : 미켈란젤로의 『최후의 심판』에 대한 아레티노의 비평

The adverse responses to Michelangelo's Last Judgment open to the general public in 1541 symbolically show that the Renaissance ends and the Counter-Reformation and the Baroque arise. From the beginning, his work attracted ciriticism that it was drawn in a manner improper to the sacred place like the Sistine Chaple. It was Aretino that fanned the flame of such atmosphere. He, though himself writing the dialogues dealing the licentious subject-matter, insisted in reverse that Michelangelo's fresco on the sacred was more licentious than his books. His critique kept up with the times and contributed to the decision the objectionable areas of the Last Judgment should be painted over. The aim of this writing is, by examining in detail the related sources including the letters between Aretino and Michelangelo, to trace the motives and intentions in the former's criticism. The conflict between them was not merely individual. It was, from a broader point of view, the result of collisions between secular and modem values the Renaissance tried to revive and religious and medieval ones resisting the former. In fact, such tensions never ceased even during the Renaissance.
