This paper looks into the discourse of development on how it recognizes the action of destruction of habitation for redevelopment and defines the residents as evictees by understanding it as a natural as well as struggle to save their places as the acts of illegal.
The purpose of this research paper is to evaluate how is the hierarchical system towards space of Korea reflected in the current mass media. Main research is based on the idea known as ‘The Social Production of Space’ of Lefebre, H and Harvey, D and also ‘Right to the city’. By using these ideas and theories, this paper re-evaluate the meaning and the subjects of space development as well as conflicts arose by it through the media report on the Yongsan development and its disastrous accident
To conduct an in-depth research on the issue, research target of the paper limits to Yongsan development and Yongsan iccident from DongA Ilbo in the period of January 2006 to June 2013 and also used the ‘Seoul Urban Planning Story (2003)’ written by Jungmok, Son who were a public officer in charge of Seoul urban planning under the President Chung-hee Park administration.
First, it appeared that DongA Ilbo created pseudovalue in the sense of development of space distancing from public concern. Moreover it defines the development district as a ghetto or slum which needs development by employing the idea of rationality from capitalism. Second, news reports from DongA Ilbo understand the social power group as the subject of the development not the residents who actually dwell in the area by excluding them. And last, DongA Ilbo defined the conflict situation arose by the disastrous accident of Yongsan as aberrations of the people who actually struggled to keep their rights as residents or ownership of the businesses by opposing the development seeing it as a destruction of their spaces.
According to ‘The Social Production of Space’ of Lefebre, H and Harvey, D, DongA Ilbo tried to keep the existing social order and relieve the conflicts by reporting Yongsan incident as an aberration by understanding the idea of space development from the capitalistic perspective which considers production of economic value of the products.
This research paper is expected to contribute to the society by bringing up the problems of the media discourse towards current status of space development and also broadening the scope of understanding on the alternative spaces.
