교회갱신의 관점에서 전망한 존 웨슬리의 성결론 —선교적 교회론으로 『존 웨슬리의 일기』 읽기 = Reconsideration of the Doctrine of Sanctification in the Theology of John Wesley from the Perspective of the Church Renewal

John Wesley's theological studies tended to revolve around his sermons. For his own reasons, Wesley did not write sophisticated and detail-organized theology books. This has made theologians who study Wesley's theology to assume that the most specific and obvious points of his theories were presented through his preaching. Through the reconstruction, re-examination, and reinterpretation of Wesley’s sermons, his theology has spread. However, processing and reordering the language and reasoning of sermons with theology, a metaphysical language and logic is profoundly thought to have a side of insufficiency for being a channel that shows a preacher’s theological purposes and faith-related passion.
Reconstructing Wesley's theology in this paper, the author argues that Wesley's diaries, journals, and the various Christian metaphors that Wesley has experienced should be used as extremely important elements. Of course, this is not to say that Wesley's sermons are meaningless when reconstructing his theology; they are important. However, the framework and direction of order in the reconstruction of Wesley’s theology must focus on the diaries and journals of Wesley and the diverse church and missionary aspirations he has experienced. These elements will be an exterior for Wesley’s theology. If the contents of this exterior classify and arrange Wesley’s sermons with the right topics, the distinctive theology of the evangelist Wesley is profoundly thought to be filled with his passion for faith.
By focusing on Wesley’s diverse Christian experiences that are written within the heart of Wesley’s journal, the author tries to understand the construction processes of Wesley’s theology of sanctification. The act of creating coherency to Wesley’s proclamation of the theology of sanctification in his sermons will momentarily be put aside, as the framework for the theology of sanctification will be created with Wesley's journal. The clues are revealed through the process of the intense spreading of the Gospel, outlining, and pursuing the missional church. The author's theological work does not aim to complete Wesley's theology of sanctification. Rather, it merely tries to become a strong bowl that can withhold the precious messages of Wesley which are from his sermons that discuss the theology of sanctification.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

존 웨슬리의 신학연구는 주로 그의 설교를 중심으로 진행되어 온 경향성이 있다. 여러 이유가 있겠지만, 웨슬리는 정교하고 세밀한 조직신학 저서를 집필하지 않았기 때문에, 그동안 웨슬리 신학을 연구하는 신학자들은 웨슬리의 신학적 사유가 가장 구체적이고 분명하게 드러난 지점을 설교라고 상정하고 그의 설교를 재구성하고 재진술하고 재해석함을 통해서 웨슬리의 신학을 펼쳐 보여주었다. 그러나 설교의 언어와 논리를 신학이라는 형이상학적 언어와 논리로 가공하여 재구성하는 것이 과연 설교를 통해 드러내려는 설교자의 신학적 의도와 신앙의 열정을 온전하게 담아내기에는 무엇인가 미흡한 면이 존재한다고 사료된다. 설교는 교회론적 컨텍스트와 설교자 자신의 신앙적 컨텍스트를 반영하여 본문을 선택하고, 말씀이 해석되는 흐름이 존재하는데, 논리적이고 형이상학적 이론신학은 이러한 컨텍스트에 대한 특이성을 중화시킬 우려가 있기 때문이다.
필자는 본 논문에서 웨슬리의 성결론을 전망함에 있어서, 웨슬리의 일기와 저널, 그리고 웨슬리가 체험했던 다양한 교회론적 전이해가 매우 중요한 요소로 고려되어야 한다고 주장한다. 물론, 웨슬리의 설교가 그의 성결론을 재구성하는 데 의미가 없다는 말이 아니다. 웨슬리의 설교는 웨슬리의 성결론을 구성하는 중요한 내용이다. 그러나 웨슬리의 성결론 탐구에 있어서 골격과 구조와 방향성에는 웨슬리의 일기와 저널과 그가 체험한 다채로운 교회와 선교적 열망이 응축되어 있어야 한다고 생각한다. 이러한 요소들이 웨슬리 성결론의 외피가 되고 그 외피의 내용으로서 웨슬리의 설교를 주제에 맞게 분류하여 정돈한다면, 복음전도자 웨슬리의 신앙의 열정이 담겨진 웨슬리의 독특한 성결신학이 탄생되리라 사료된다.
