The diastema is defined as a space greater than 0.5millmeter between the proximal surfaces of adjacent teeth. It is a normal stage in the primary dentition and the early mixed dentition(i.e. Ugly duckling stage), especially between the ages of 7 and 12 years. Usually these diastmas close completely after eruption of permanent maxillary cuspid.
Genetic factor, heavy labial frenum, habits, degree of deep bite, direction of long axis of incisor and mesiodens can cause midilne diastema. Of these, mesiodens located between both maxillary central incisors can cause diastema.
The present case reports show that the abnormal midline diastema caused by mesiodens during Ugly-ducking stage have become spontaneous closure after surgical removal.
