The purposes of the present study were two fold. The one was to verify the educational value of Korean traditional living science and the other was to find out ways to apply our traditional culture to early childhood science education. To achieve the purposes, the researchers reviewed the literature on science education as well as on Korean traditional culture examined items displayed in various folk museums located in Seoul area and finally attempted to develop exemplary science activities utilizing Korean traditional living science.
According to the literature review, the values of Korean traditional living science in early childhood science education can be summarized as follows:
First, the natural aspect imbedded in Korean living science is an important element in educating our children. Second, Korean traditional living science is highly valuable in the sense that it has many aspects that can match the perspective of constructivist science education. Third, Korean traditional living science can be an affluent resource area that shows ways to apply the new trend of History and Philosophy of Science to early childhood science education.
In developing exemplary science activities using Korean traditional living science, the researchers selected the items of 'making Korean cake', `dyeing with natural materials', and `grinding grains'. All these items were selected due to their open-ended and process-oriented characteristics. The researchers presented concrete explanations to proceed the activities based on the constructivist perspective suggested by Kamii and DeVries. They also provided new designs for activity materials which had been revised from the traditional items.
