In predicting the performance of sound insulating enclosures or partitions, infinitely extended panels have been used as a sound transmission model, because there are many difficulties in analyzing the finite system. In practice, the panel is obviously finite. Thus it is important to clarify the difference between a finite panel and an infinite one. In 1970, Sewell established the model for sound transmission model through the finite panel. Is spite of good agreement with experimental results, his results have inherent error due to exclusion of the resonant transmission.
In this work, the relative contributions of resonant and non-resonant transmission for the case of a sound transmission through a finite panel are evaluated. From the results, one can obtain some regions depending on internal loss factor and area in which the resonant transmission can be neglected.
