This study makes a comparison between Generic Referring Quantifiers Mei(枚) and Ge(個). Observing their diachronic developments in detail from the Pre-Qin Period to Tang Dynasty, it concludes that Mei(枚) and Ge(個)come not from the extension of the relevant Classifiers but are generic referring quantifiers from the very beginning. Both of them begin in the Pre-Qin Period, Mei(枚) is mainly for ensuring the number of items, Ge(個) is mainly for narrations. After entering the the Northern and Southern Dynasties ,three words(個、介、箇) have merged into one quantifier: Ge(個), so the quantifier can be used in larger extension, and can be used in noun-num-measure structure and num-measure-noun structure. Mei(枚) was still mainly for ensuring the number and only used in noun-num-measure structure.
