39사단과 함께 하는 <열린 인문학> 강좌

국문 초록 (Abstract)

'39사단과 함께 하는 인문학강좌'는 2008년 3월부터 12월까지 장병을 대상으로 한 일반강좌 31회, 영관급 장교를 대상으로 한 고급심화강좌 15회, 지역문화유산답사 및 박물관 탐방 5회, 개강식과 수료식 및 축하공연 2회 등 모두 53회에 걸친 강좌를 진행하여 연인원 6,400 여명의 장병이 참여하였다.
'39사단과 함께 하는 인문학강좌'는 특수집단이라 할 수 있는 군부대의 장병을 대상으로 하는 것이기 때문에 대학과 부대의 유기적인 협력체제 구축이 필수적인데, 사단장 이하 부대 간부들의 적극적인 협조를 바탕으로 많은 성과를 거둘 수 있었다. 또한 인문학강좌를 통해서 대학과 부대의 협력체제가 강화되고, 지역사회·지역민과 함께 하는 대학과 부대라는 이미지를 제고함으로써 지역사회와의 유대도 강화되는 성과를 얻었다는 점이 가장 큰 소득이라 할 수 있다. 인문학강좌에 대해서 지역 언론들도 ‘대중과 함께 하는 인문학’ ‘현장을 찾아가는 인문학’이라고 하면서 대단히 높은 평가를 내리고 있다.
인문학강좌를 통해서 얻어진 성과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
1) 인문학적 지식의 사회 환원과 인문학의 활성화 : 대학이 갖고 있는 전문적 지식과 자원으로 군부대 인문학 강좌를 실시하여 군의 구성원들과 소통함으로써 인문학적 지식을 사회에 환원하고 아울러 지역 사회와의 연계를 통해 인문학을 활성화하는 효과를 얻을 수 있었다.
2) 새롭고 개방적인 군 이미지 창출 : 군부대 역시 인문학 강좌를 통해 지역의 대학과 소통함으로써 사회와 단절된 폐쇄적인 기존의 이미지에서 탈피하여 ‘인문학을 배우는 군, 그리고 지역 사회와 함께 하는 군’이라는 참신하고도 개방적인 군 이미지를 창출하여 국민들의 군에 대한 기대치를 높이고, 군에 대한 새로운 위상을 정립할 수 있는 계기를 마련하였다.
3) 군 구성원의 모범적 시민으로서의 자질 함양 : 인문학 강좌를 통해 군 장병들은 지성과 능력을 일깨우고 배양함으로써 삶을 즐겁고 유능하게 경영할 수 있는 모범적 시민으로서의 자질을 함양할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 되었으며, 병영 생활이라는 특수한 상황에서 접하기 어려운 문학, 역사, 예술, 철학, 문화, 세계탐방 등 다양한 인문학 강좌를 통해 고급 교양지식을 배울 뿐 아니라, 삶에 대해 성찰하고 인간의 진정한 행복과 가치에 대해 진지하게 사유하는 능력을 갖게 됨으로써, 삶에 대한 한층 성숙된 안목을 키우는 효과를 기대할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

‘Open Humanities Courses with the 39th Army Division’

At the present time, each group in society, by breaking down mutual barriers through interaction, progresses together while pursuing its greater value. The Humanities Department of Changwon National University and the 39th Army Division have just launched ‘Open Humanities Courses with the 39th Army Division’ to respond to this requirement of the Age and establish a cooperative system which will contribute to formulating the consensus as a member of the local community.
The courses will be taken for about 120-150 audiences between 6.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on Thursdays at the History Hall of the 39th Army Division. The audience will include soldiers, military officers, their family members, nearby citizens, or students studying at Changwon National University. No separate registration is needed. The purpose, necessity and subsequent effect of the courses are the following.

1) The Activation of the Humanities and the Reconsideration of Its Social Significance
It is evident that we live in a crisis of the Humanities, because most people consider practical value and economic logic as their foremost objectives in life. This devalues man and hinders any serious meditation about the purpose of his life. The Humanities Department of Changwon National University intends to make the Humanities subjects open to the public as a way of overcoming this crisis. We aim to vigorously share with the community (the 39th Army Division) the academic achievements that have been verified through researches and teachings at the University. Through this activity, we wish to make an opportunity to re-establish the social value of the Humanities and their actualization in society.

2) The Creation of Open-hearted Image of the Army
The army will be able to shed its previous image of isolation from society by allowing its soldiers to participate in the Humanities courses. Soldiers are also expected to produce a new and open-minded image to demonstrate ‘their cooperation with the local society’.

3) The Education of Knowledge of the Humanities, Nurture of Exemplary Citizens, and Inducing of Positive Military Life
It is, indeed, time to get away from maintaining the earlier notion of soldiers as sheltered members from society and to understand soldiers as young people who are responsible for leading the country towards the future. In addition, we should not perceive the period of the armed services as an alienated time from the social set, but to recognize it as an opportune time to nurture a vision of mature and righteous life, and a positive view of nation. The courses will enable the soldiers to obtain an interesting and diverse range of the general Humanities subjects such as literature, history, philosophy, art, education, and traveling, which otherwise they might have little or no access to during their term of service. After their army service is completed, their grasp of cultural knowledge will help them to enjoy and conduct their lives with competence, and simultaneously, to lead their lives as civilians in an exemplary way.
Regarding the subsequent effect of the Humanities courses that deal with reflection and the awakening of self, man, and a desirable value of life; it will also direct the soldiers to motivate the mind toward respecting and caring about human beings. Additionally, the positive effect of the Humanities courses will help to guide them in the conduct of a stable and good way of military life.
