여성의 몸에 새겨진 노예들의 합창: 그레이스 니콜스의 『나는 오래된 기억을 지닌 여성』

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 카리브해 가이아나(Guyana) 출신 영국의 흑인 여성작가 그레이스 니콜스(Grace Nichols)의『나는 오래된 기억을 지닌 여성』(i is a long-memoried woman)의 내용을 바탕으로, 흑인 노예 여성의 역사 증언으로서의 시와 여성의 글쓰기에 대해 탐색하는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 첫 번째로 시집의 5개 장 각각의 내용과 구조를 분석하고, 전통적인 서사시 형식을 어떤 방식으로 재해석 했는가를 살펴보았다. 두 번째로 시에 나타난 여성의 몸과 글쓰기에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 세 번째로, 니콜스가 선택한 구전 전통과 크리올 영어 사용이 시의 내용를 전달하는데 있어 어떻게 효과적으로 기여하는지 분석하였다. 마지막으로 소설과는 달리 운문 형식에서 발현되는 공연예술적인 요소를 살펴봄으로써 역사를 “오래 기억되”게 만드는 시의 힘에 대해 살펴보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is exploring poetry as a testimony on the history of black slave woman and the woman’s writing focused on Grace Nichols’ i is a long-memoried woman. For these explorations, the following issues are discussed; first, through analysis of the poems of five chapters, this study considers how Nichols appropriated the traditional epic genre in the context of postcolonial literature. Second, this study is trying to relate writing the body to representation of the body and of female sexuality. Third, the oral tradition and use of Creol English are surveyed in order to convey the meaning of poetry effectively. Fourth, this study searches the power of poetry as a form of performance, which makes the history “long memoried.”
