한마음선원 목각 후불탱화의 상징성에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Symbolism of the Wood Carved Altarpieces at Hanmaum Seonwon

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 한마음선원 목각 후불탱화의 상징성에 대한 분석을 목적으로 한다. 대행大行의 주도로 조성된 이 목각 탱화는 붓다의 가르침을 창조적이고 독창적으로 형상화하였다. 일반적인 후불탱화가 석가모니불의 설법 장면인 영산회상도를 묘사하는 것과 달리, 한마음선원의 후불탱화는 붓다가 정각을 이룬 장엄한 세계를 상징적으로 표현하였다. 특히 한국 불교의 법맥을 잇는 16국사와 16선사들을 도상화한 점은 역사적으로도 그 의의가 큰 것으로 평가된다. 또한 중앙의 본존불을 중심으로 좌우에 지옥계와 중생계를 배치함으로써 과거, 현재, 미래가 하나의 장엄한 세계로 펼쳐지도록 상징화하였다. 이는 다른 사찰의 후불탱화에서 찾기 어려운 한마음선원 목각 후불탱화만의 특징이라 할 수 있다.
본 논문에서는 이러한 특징들을 세부적으로 고찰하며, 대행의 사상이 붓다의 가르침을 탱화에 어떻게 담아내었는지 분석한다. 대행은 이 후불탱화를 가리켜 ‘화엄 세계’가 펼쳐진 것이라고 하였다. 즉, 한마음선원의 목각 탱화는 『화엄경』, 『금강경』, 『반야경』 등의 대승불교 사상이 융합되어 그 상징성을 드러내고 있다. 본 연구는 기존의 불교 미술사적인 연구 방식에서 더 나아가, 붓다의 가르침이 도상학적으로 어떻게 상징화되었는지를 고찰했다는 점에서 차별화된 사례적 의의를 지닌다. 또한, 한마음선원 목각 후불탱화의 사례 분석을 통해, 사찰 장엄물에 함축된 붓다 가르침의 상징성이 어떻게 사상적으로 발현되는지를 분석하여 이에 관한 사상적 연구의 기틀을 마련하였다는 데 그 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes the symbolism of the wood carved altarpieces at Hanmaum Seonwon (Seon Center). Crafted under the leadership of Myogong Daehaeng, these wood carved altarpieces, creatively and ingeniously portray the Buddha’s teachings. Unlike typical altar paintings which depict the Buddha’s teaching on the Vulture Peak, those at Hanmaum Seonwon symbolically depict the majestic world where the Buddha attained perfect enlightenment. The iconography of the 16 National Preceptors and 16 Seon Masters, who have passed on the lineage of Korean Buddhism, is considered historically significant. Furthermore, the placement of the realm of hell and the realm of sentient beings on either side of the central Buddha symbolizes the unfolding of past, present, and future into a single, majestic world. Hanmaum Seonwon’s wood carved altarpieces have unique characteristics of their own, rarely found in those of other temples.
This paper examines these characteristics in detail and analyzes how Daehaeng’s thought embodied the Buddha’s teachings in these altarpieces. Daehaeng referred to these altarpieces as the unfolding of the “Avataṃsaka World.” In other words, the wood carved altarpieces at Hanmaum Seonwon reveal a symbolic fusion of Mahayana Buddhist thought, including the Avataṃsaka Sutra, Diamond Sutra, and Prajnaparamita Sutras. This study holds unique significance as a case study in that it goes beyond the historical research of conventional Buddhist art and examines how the Buddha’s teachings are depicted through iconography. Furthermore, this case study of Hanmaum Seonwon’s altarpieces analyzes how the symbolism of the Buddha’s teachings, implicit in temple ornaments, is ideologically expressed, thereby laying the foundation for further ideological research.
