This study examines the 16-step mindfulness of breathing practice, presented in the Ānāpānasati Sutta (Majjhima Nikāya. 118), within the overall structure of the four foundations of mindfulness. Through this I aim to elucidate how each step unfolds within the practice context of Early Buddhist Texts (EBTs). In preceding studies and modern meditation discourses, there has been a tendency to understand ānāpānasati as being limited to mindfulness of the body, or reduced to the dichotomy of samatha and vipassana, or as a psychological technique for emotional regulation. By focusing on the verbs and tenses used to describe the core concepts of ānāpānasati, this paper examines, based on EBTs, the idea that mindfulness of breathing practice is presented not as a deliberate manipulation or induction of mental states, but as a process in which the experience of practice gradually emerges through sustained awareness.
I confirm, based on these texts, that in the mindfulness of feelings, mental activity is presented together with feelings and gradually progresses to concentration, and that in the mindfulness of the mind, “liberation of the mind” develops into a practice that lets go of objects perceived by the senses, transcends the state of absorption, and reflects on the mind that is freed from greed, hatred, and delusion. I discuss that “impermanence, freedom from desire, cessation, and letting go” of the mindfulness of dhammas are achieved together in the mindfulness practice of body, feelings, and mind, and that, depending on the depth of practice, they can be experienced at different levels, from temporary liberation to ultimate liberation.
In this way, I confirm that ānāpānasati unfolds within an organic flow in which all the foundations of mindfulness are not separated. This study suggests that ānāpānasati must be understood within the practice structure of EBTs, which connects ānāpānasati to the four foundations of mindfulness, and then to the seven limbs of enlightenment. It also suggests that modern applications of ānāpānasati need to be reexamined based on this structure EBTs.
