The scientific and technological potential of South Africa, as well as its economic importance and political and social dynamics in world affairs, commands today that independent Africa reassess out of date attitudes by redefining a frankly constructive policy of mutual accommodation and fruitful cooperation with the Republic of South Africa, in a climate of trust and respect. The way to do this is through an open dialogue devoid of negativism and foreign interference. The following proposal is a coherently fair and honest analysis that should leave no one indifferent. Academics in Africa should come forward and be counted in this very important debate and research, however sensitive the issue. The practice of research commands that we stick to the truth wherever it may lead us. (October 27, 1983.)
