Electrochemical CO2 capture offers a promising and energy-efficient approach to removing atmospheric CO2 by enabling reversible redox-mediated capture and release processes that operate isothermally under ambient conditions. However, practical implementation has been limited by a fundamental trade-off: redox potentials must be sufficiently positive to avoid parasitic oxidation by O2, yet such shifts typically weaken CO2 binding affinity—particularly problematic at atmospheric concentrations (~400 ppm). Here, we report an oxygen-stable electrochemical CO2 capture system based on 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PAQ), whose microenvironment is precisely tuned via interaction with vicinal diols. High-throughput computational screening, supported by experimental validation, reveals that diols bearing adjacent hydroxyl groups form bidentate hydrogen bonds with PAQ’s carbonyls, resulting in a pseudo-ring structure that stabilizes the reduced quinone while preserving CO2 affinity. This molecular design enables the first demonstration of electrochemical CO2 capture from air under oxygen-rich conditions, representing a critical step toward the practical deployment of electrochemical CO2 capture technologies.
