중독을 권장하는 사회 = The Society Encouraging Addiction - Terrence McNally’s Bad Habits -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1970년대 미국사회는 국가적 투자와 국민의 건강에 대한 관심의 증가로 인해 의학의 사회적 영향력이 커지게 되고 그것이 국민들의 생활습관과 정신건강까지 담당하게 되면서 개인의 삶에 대한 통제 영역을 확대하게 되었다. 또한 사회적 이슈나 공적인 일에 대한 관심보다는 ‘나’에게 집중한 개인적인 쾌락과 행복에 집착하는 나르시시즘적 문화에 심취하게 되면서 개인은 사회 시스템에 무관심하게 되고 오히려 이에 종속되어갔다. 이러한 사회적 분위기는 결국 의학이 건강과 행복이란 이슈에 결탁되면서 개인의 생활과 정신을 관리할 수 있게 하였고 개인은 스스로 환자 되기를 자처하면서 자신의 삶을 의학적 지식에 의존하게 만들었다. 이러한 미국사회 분위기를 반영하고 있는 테렌스 맥낼리의 1974년 극, 『나쁜 습관들』은 알코올중독이나 다양한 성도착증 등의 극단화된 정신적인 문제를 가진 사람들뿐만 아니라 사회가 제시하고 있는 정형화된 행복한 결혼생활을 하지 못하고 있는 부부들까지 환자화하고 있다. 극은 그러한 사람들을 환자화한 병원을 배경으로 하면서 의학이 권력화 된 사회의 일면을 제시한다. 다시 말하면, 극은 사회적 이상에 부합하지 못한 나르시시즘적 개인이 스스로를 환자화하고 병원에 수감되는 것을 자초하도록 하는 메카니즘이 의학적 지식에 의해 정당화 되는 사회를 폭로하고 있다. 결국 이 극은 의학이란 권력이 그러한 사회가 조장한 나르시시즘적 인간을 환자화하며 개인의 삶을 통제한 1970년대의 미국사회의 개인 통제 메커니즘의 실상을 고발하고 있다.

Terrence McNally’s play, Bad Habits, depicts a society where the medical power controls individual life. The play also shows the problems of a narcissistic society producing many patients who blame themselves for the failure of being happy. In the play, not only psychiatric patients such as an alcoholic and sexual deviants, but also normal individuals are voluntarily hospitalized in the hospitals called “Ravenswood” and “Dunelawn,” which are also the names of the two acts. Dr. Pepper and Dr.Toynbee in each hospital as the symbols of medical power dominate a society filled with individuals who are addicted to social ideals and misunderstand them as their own ideals. The doctors also encourage their patients to be isolated from each other in the hospital. Bad Habits criticizes American society operated by the social control mechanism justified by medicine and at the same time it also warns narcissistic individuals who indulged into themselves in the 1970s. As the title of the play, Bad Habits, implies addiction. The hospitals in the play can be seen as representing a society which encourages individuals to be addicted to social ideals and systems.
