아일랜드성(Irishness)의 ‘안과 밖’: 슬픈 아일랜드와 켈틱 타이거 사이

국문 초록 (Abstract)

(1) 총론: 이 연구는 인문학과 사회과학의 융합연구를 통해 아일랜드성(Irishness)에 대한 심층적인 지역학적 접근을 시도한다. 이 연구는 경제, 문학, 대중문화, 비교문학(미국문학), 비교문학(한국문학) 등의 시각에서 종합적인 아일랜드 지역학 연구를 지향하며, 한국의 미래발전모델로서 아일랜드 모델의 공과를 점검한다. 1차년도에서는 19세기이후 식민지 시대에 나타난 아일랜드의 경제적·문학적·문화적 경험의 양상을 다룬다. 2차년도 연구에서는 1922년의 자치공화국(Irish Free State) 이후의 탈식민 경험의 양상을 연구한다. 3차년도에서는 1960년대 이후 폭력적으로 분출된 북아일랜드 분쟁 이후의 아일랜드의 당대적 상황을 살펴본다.

(2) 경제: 2000년대 중반까지도 성공한 강소국(Celtic Tiger)으로 칭송받았던 아일랜드는 2008년 국제금융위기 이후 가장 먼저 심각한 위기를 겪는 처지에 빠진 바 있다. 최근 빠르게 회복하고 있으나 장기적, 제도적, 역사적인 시각에서 아일랜드 모델의 형성, 특징, 한계에 대해 분석할 필요가 있다. 3년에 걸쳐 본 연구는 아일랜드의 발전이 유럽의 다른 국가들보다 매우 느렸는데 영국의 오랜 식민지배가 이에 대해 어느 정도 책임이 있는가, 1980년대 이후 아일랜드가 어떤 정책을 통해 농업 중심적이고 보수적이며 영국 종속적인 경제 시스템에서 개방적, 산업적 국가로 변모했는가, 최근 아일랜드의 경제위기는 아일랜드 모델의 근본적 한계를 의미하는 것인가를 분석하였다.

(3) 아일랜드 문학: 19세기말~20세기초 식민지 경험과 탈식민의 과정을 겪었던 조이스(James Joyce)와 예이츠(W.B. Yeats)가 공유했거나 차이를 보였던 ‘아일랜드성(Irishness)’에 대한 탐색의 과정을 1차년도와 2차년도의 연구대상으로 삼았다. 3차년도 연구에서는 1960년대 이후에 본격화된 북아일랜드 문제를 주요한 시적 대상으로 삼으면서 현대적 의미의 아일랜드성을 천착한 시인 히니(Seamus Heaney)의 작품을 검토하였다. 이들의 문학적 활동공간은 다르지만 그들이 공유하는 문제의식은 아일랜드의 (탈)식민경험, 탈식민 이후의 정치적·종교적·문화적 갈등과 대립을 넘어서는 새로운 아일랜드성의 형성을 탐구하는 것이었다.

(4) 대중문화: 이 연구는 대중문화를 통해 아일랜드성이 무엇인지를 파악하고자 한다. 1차 년도에서는 <리버댄스>와 <로드 오브 더 댄스>를 통해 그들이 어떤 방식으로 전통을 재창조하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 2차 년도에서는 타 민족의 지배를 받은 민족에게 민족주의가 남아 있는 것은 당연한 것이지만 그것이 어떻게 아일랜드에서 표상

(1) Summary: This study attempts an in-depth regional approach to Irishness through an interdisciplinary study of humanities and social sciences. The purpose of this research is to delve into the comprehensive Irish regional studies from the perspective of economics, literature, popular culture, comparative literature (American literature) and comparative literature (Korean literature) and examines the lessons of the Irish model as Korea's future development model. The first year deals with some aspects of Ireland's economic, literary and cultural experiences that have emerged since colonial times since the nineteenth century. The second year study examines the post-colonial experience after the 1922 Irish Free State. The third year examines the contemporary situation of Ireland after the violent eruption of the Northern Ireland conflict since the 1960s.

(2) Economy: Ireland, which has been praised as a successful Celtic Tiger in the mid-2000s, has suffered the first serious crisis since the 2008 global financial crisis.
