This study explores the influence of entrepreneurial environment perception and personal competencies on employees’ entrepreneurial intentions. Recognizing the increasing importance of employee entrepreneurship as a driver of innovation and economic growth, the research addresses existing gaps by examining both environmental and individual factors that shape entrepreneurial intentions among employees. Entrepreneurial environment perception is categorized into four components: perception of government support, perception of entrepreneurial opportunities, perception of failure burden, and perception of job insecurity. Personal competencies are divided into four areas: financial competency, industry-specific competency, networking competency, and ICT competency.
A survey of 288 employees from various industries in Korea was conducted, and the data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that entrepreneurial opportunity perception, financial competency, industry-specific competency, networking competency, and ICT competency have significant positive effects on employees’ entrepreneurial intentions. Conversely, perception of failure burden negatively influences entrepreneurial intentions. However, perceptions of government support and job insecurity did not show significant effects.
Among all factors, industry-specific competency exhibited the strongest influence, followed by entrepreneurial opportunity perception, perception of failure burden, financial competency, networking competency, and ICT competency.
This study contributes to the academic understanding of employee entrepreneurship by empirically testing the role of both environmental perceptions and personal competencies. Practically, it offers insights for policymakers and organizations seeking to foster employee entrepreneurship by emphasizing the enhancement of individual competencies and the creation of supportive entrepreneurial environments.
