Kogido(古義堂) is a private school established in AD 1662. by I to Jinsai(伊藤仁齋), who was an educator and a Japanese Confucian philosopher of Kogigaku(古義學, “study of ancient meanings”).
It was also called Horikawa-Juku(堀川塾) or Horikawa-School(堀川學校). There were several famous private schools in Kyoto in the Edo period, and Kogido was one of the most representative.
From Jinsai to Yusai(輶齋, the 6th), the head of the Ito family inherited the president of the academy from generation to generation over 240 years until 1906.
Kyoto was also hit by many big fires in Tokugawa era, but Kogido miraculously escaped fire and valuable books, literature, historical materials, calligraphy and paintings have been handed down.
From 1941 to 1945, All of the literature of Kogido was collected by Tenri Central Library(天理圖書館) and named Kogido Bunko(古義堂文庫).
Tenri Central Library was opened in 1926 by Shozen Nakayama(中山正善), the 2nd Shinbashira(the leader of Tenrikyo).
Currently, Kogido Bunko is one of the four special collections of the Tenri Central Library. Others include the Wataya Bunko(綿屋文庫), a collection donated by the Tenrikyo Nakayama family, the Yoshida Bunko(吉田文庫), a books by the Shinto Yoshida family, and the Kinsei Bunko(近世文庫), a collection of materials collected by the local historian Yasui Yoshitaro(保井芳太郎).
In addition to literature on Kogigaku school, the Kogido Bunko also includes literature on medicine and herbs, Korean cultural studies, materials related to the Joseon Tongsinsa(朝鮮通信使; Joseon missions to Japan), and books published in the Sung(宋), Ming(明), and Qing(淸) dynasties of China.
