      Artistic conception is a very important concept in Chinese traditional art theory. This paper analyzes the meaning of the artistic conception from three dimensions: the linguistic sign, the image, the meaning. The ‘linguistic sign’ refers to all kinds of symbols for artistic expression. The ‘linguistic sign’ realizes the integration with the life ontology of the art, and acts as the basic material of artistic conception. Linguistic signs form the image which is the core material of artistic conception. The ‘meaning’ is attached by image, and forms the ‘imagery’. In ‘imagery’, the ‘meaning’ is the soul, and the ‘image’ is the body attached by the ‘meaning’. With imagery, the artistic work can construct the artistic conception. Essentially, the artistic conception is realized in the communication process of aesthetic experience between the creation subject and the receiving subject. And it is also realized in the integration of expectation horizon between creation and reception. Artistic conception is the “calling structure” of art work, and it is an art field which can evoke the essence of life and some positive awakenings. This paper expects a deep understanding of the artistic conception through the aesthetic structuring of the artistic conception.
